We will begin accepting new submissions on May 27, 2019.
Thank you for considering publication with Vital Narrative Press! It’s been almost two years since we accepted new manuscripts and we want this process to be as seamless as possible.
We will be considering fiction, non-fiction and poetry for publication. The submission period will open in late May and last throughout the summer ending in early September. We will not accept work that has been previously published in print, online books or magazines (this doesn’t include self-publishing to blogs, message boards or social media).
Simultaneous submissions are encouraged. Please notify us immediately if your query is accepted with another publication.
No identifying personal or contact information should appear on any pages of your manuscript. Submissions should include a query letter, an author biography, any social media platforms you would like to share and a sample of your work. Upload your file through the submission manager system, powered by Evalato. Be sure to include the letter, bio, social media and writing sample in a single file (.doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf, .txt) removing any identifying information. Contact information will be supplied through the online form.
FOR FICTION/NON-FICTION SUBMISSIONS: Your sample should include no more than three short stories or the first three chapters of your full manuscript. There is no word count limit. Submissions may be any length, any style or any subject. Multiple entries by a single author are acceptable and each submission will be treated as a separate entry with an additional $25 fee.
FOR POETRY SUBMISSIONS: Multiple poems should not be submitted separately. Please submit all poems together in one document. Your sample should include no less than four poems and no more than ten. There is no line-limit. Poems may be any length, any style or any subject. Multiple entries by a single poet are acceptable, however each group of ten poems must be treated as a separate entry with an additional $25 fee.
Documents cannot be revised after submission. Work should be polished, but minor typos are expected and will not affect our decision to pursue publication (that’s what our editors are for). If you've made a significant mistake to a paid submission, DO NOT pay the fee twice. Shoot us an email and we’ll correct it for you.
Our submissions are open to people of color worldwide, but work must be written mostly in English.
Submission fees are nonrefundable.
All queries will be contacted by October 1, 2019. We are no longer accepting submissions through email — all electronic entries must come through the submission manager above.
NOTE: Once your submission is received, we will work as quickly as we can to respond to your query, but we're only human and the submission flow waxes and wanes, so response times will vary considerably. Feel free to stay in touch, but please refrain from inundating our inbox with continuous requests for a reply to your entry.
If your manuscript is not accepted for publication, please remain encouraged and continue to write. You are always welcome to submit again in the future.
